Quayside Cottage

8 Quay Road, Charlestown, St. Austell
Cornwall PL25 3NX

The cottage lies in a terrace of Grade II Listed houses overlooking the harbour. Charlestown is unique: a completely unspoilt village built in 1780 by the Rashleigh family, it grew as a working china clay port on the southern edge of St. Austell. The whole village was privately owned until the 1980's and retains it's history and magic.

The attractive Georgian harbour is currently home to a fleet of tall ships, and the village and surrounding farmland and port have been featured in many films and documentaries. There are beaches on either side of the harbour and the Cornwall South Coast Path leads to Carlyon Bay and Porthpean.

There are a variety of local shops and businesses in the village and several restaurants all within a few minutes walk. Tesco and Asda are both less than a mile from Charlestown and St. Austell boasts a 3 screen cinema. Only 20 minutes from the lovely cathedral city of Truro, with its excellent shops, Charlestown is close to spectacular beaches and fishing villages, famous gardens (including the Lost Gardens of Heligan), the exciting Eden Project, National Trust properties and wild moorland.

The second home of the explorer Robin Hanbury-Tenison and his wife Louella, Quayside Cottage is a lovely, well-proportioned and beautifully decorated and furnished house of great comfort, centrally heated throughout. A wide entrance hall leads to a sitting room with television and video; an elegant drawing room and a lovely dining room.

The kitchen has a gas AGA, gas oven and hob, fridge, dishwasher and microwave. A small lobby with washing machine gives access to a back yard with outhouse, fridge-freezer and loo. A sturdy wooden staircase with a sundeck leads to the lawned garden which is at a higher level. There is also a downstairs loo in the house.

If you would like basic groceries bought in advance, please send me a shopping list. Drying-up cloths, washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets, foil and cling film are all provided.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms: two have 5' wide four-posters, one has a 4' double bed and one bedroom is a single. One bedroom has an en-suite shower, basin and loo, and there are two other bathrooms.

The whole house has been completely redecorated and is immaculate. Linen and towels are included (but please supply your own swimming/beach towels).

Telephone calls to be paid for please. Baby sitting can be arranged. The gardener comes for 4 hours once a week.

There are two delightful bathrooms and an en-suite shower room. One bathroom is stencilled with a 'seafaring' theme, using images of tall ships, compasses and anchors.

The second bathroom is in a Shaker style with wooden panelling. A sea gull theme is found throughout the house.

On the day of your arrival please do not turn up before 2.00pm. There is free parking for 2 cars on the quay outside the cottage. On your departure day please can you leave by 10.00am. This gives us time to clean the house and change the linen etc. An inventory of the house contents is available and all breakages must be owned up to and paid for.

Please contact Louella to find out about avalability and price for the week you may be interested in.

Just a thought! If you have booked to stay at Charlestown from a Saturday to a Saturday the worst thing to think about (certainly in the summer months and school holidays) is the ghastly traffic coming into and leaving Cornwall. We do bed and breakfast here on our farm Cabilla Manor on Bodmin Moor, and if you wanted to get this far on the Friday night please contact us and we will take you in for the night. If you would like to stay closer to the Eden Project or if Quayside Cottage is unavailable when you want to visit then why not stay at our Chapel in Trethurgy.
